The Best Indoor Soccer Formations to Use in 2023

Many people don’t realize that playing soccer indoors can drastically change the gameplay from what they are used to in regular soccer. Offense and defense take on wholly new meanings when you have only 4 players in the field, like in 5-a-side.

Here we review some common indoor soccer formations to help you adjust if you’re new to the indoor scenario. And even if you’re already familiar with indoor soccer strategy, you may end up learning new tips for your indoor soccer game.

Soccer, whether indoor or outdoor, doesn’t need a lot of equipment. All you need is a playing field, a ball, and the right pair of shoes. It helps to know some basic strategies too :).

Let’s start with learning the basic player distribution of an indoor soccer field.

Indoor Soccer Positions

Excluding the goalkeepers, there may be 4, 5, or 6 players in each team. These players will be one of the following:

  • Defenders – their aim is to prevent the opposing team from scoring
  • Strikers – they try to strike goals against the other team.
  • Midfielders – have multiple roles. They pass the ball along the field. Depending upon the strategy being employed, they can assist the defenders or the forwards. In some cases, they may be tasked with actively trying to score.

Basic Indoor Soccer Strategy

Indoor soccer formations

The most important part of any game is the players. Knowing the roles of each player is essential in understanding the game and developing a winning plan.

Any game played in teams relies on teamwork, indoor soccer even more so than regular soccer, because the ball needs to be passed rapidly from player to player. As such, it is essential to have good player synergy and coordination.

Indoor Soccer Strategy 7v7

A 7v7 game offers more opportunities for strategic gameplay as there are more players and this more flexibility of positioning. Some 7v7 indoor soccer strategies are:

  • 3-2-1
  • 3-1-1-1
  • 3-1-2
  • 2-2-2
  • 2-1-2-1
  • 2-3-1

We will be discussing a few of these in detail below, but you can take an overview in this table:

3-1-2FairStrong132Wide midfielders

7v7 strategy -> 2-1-2-1

This formation offers a balanced approach with solid defensive coverage, midfield control, and attacking options. It allows for quick transitions from defense to attack and provides opportunities for combination play between midfielders and forwards.

Indoor soccer formation 7v7 (2-1-2-1)

Attack: The 2-1-2-1 strategy is great for attacking. The striker is well-supported, with four players able to provide passes and runs in behind; the wide midfielders who can widen the attack, and the forward midfielders who can support the striker directly.

This is one of the key strengths of the 2-1-2-1 formation. You can create overloads in the attacking third. Your wide midfielders can tuck inside to create a three-man midfield, or the attacking midfielders can run wide to create a three-man attack. This attack formation is difficult to defend against.

Defense: The 2-1-2-1 formation is super effective at defending against counter-attacks and for defense in general. The two central defenders cover for each other, while the defensive midfielder sits in front of them and protects them. The wide midfielders can also be part of the defense, as they can track back and help defend their flanks.

The wide midfielders have a very fluid role. This fluidity can be an advantage if the players are well trained. It can also lead to a weakened defense if these two players stray to far away from their positions.

Pros: Striker has a lot of support and can lead a good attack

Cons: If too big a gap is created between the forward midfielders and the defenders, the other team can quickly take advantage to attempt a goal.

7v7 strategy ->2-3-1

This is one of the most effective strategies offering both good defense and a reasonable offense. The two defenders are supported by the three midfielders. The center midfielder can also move forward and support the striker. The left and right midfielders help in widening the attack.

Indoor soccer formation 7v7 (2-3-1)

Pros: This is a good goal-scoring offense strategy. The roles are well defined and with a strong striker, alert defenders, and active midfielders, it can be a winning strategy.

Cons:

  • Striker can be easily isolated
  • Defenders can be forced apart to leave the goal open

7v7 strategy -> 3-1-2

This is a good defense strategy. It offers flexibility to the right and left defenders to move up the field and support the center midfielder as required. Attacks are made with support from the wide defenders.

Indoor soccer formation 7v7 (3-2-1)

Pros: Strong defense

Cons:

  • Center midfielders are often tempted to move up completely, leaving the defense isolated.
  • Right and left defenders need to be fast during offense and move back quickly to their defensive positions.

Indoor Soccer Formations 6×6

The most common number of players in an indoor soccer team is 6 – a-side. Some popular forward-midfielder-defender ratios are:

  • 2,2,1
  • 2,1,2
  • 1-3-1

Let’s overview the 6v6 formations:

Brief overview of 6v6 indoor soccer formations

6v6 strategy ->2-2-1

A good strategy with strong defense and a weak offense. There are two defenders, while the striker relies heavily on the mid-fielders for goal scoring. Less skilled mid-fielders often end up going too far up the field while in offense, leaving the defenders open to attack.

6v6 indoor soccer strategies (2-2-1)

Pros: strong defense

Cons: weak offense

6v6 strategy -> 2-1-2

As opposed to the 2-2-1, this is a more offensive strategy. The center midfielder needs to shuttle up and down the field to help with the attack while keeping the gap in the defense closed.

6v6 indoor soccer strategies (2-1-2)

Pros: Flexible strategy, that can be easily adapted to defense too.

Cons: If the center midfielder is pulled too far up the field, the defense can crumble.

6v6 strategy -> 1-3-1

The best strategy to use of you  have strong midfielders. This can be easily messed up because the defense is very weak, but good midfielders can easily cover both the front and back ends.

6v6 indoor soccer strategies (1-3-1)

Pros: Adds fluidity to the game giving more playing options to the attackers.

Cons: Very weak defense.

Indoor Soccer Strategy Formations 5v5

5v5 soccer games most often depend upon good midfielders, as both strikers and defenders depend heavily on them.

5v5 strategy -> 1-2-1

The most popular 5v5 strategy, this is as much balance as you can get with a small team. The most difficult role falls to the mid-fielders, who will be running up and down the field providing support to defense and offense as required.

Pros: Flexible formation, quickly adjustable to attack or defense

Cons: Players are committed to neither attack nor defense, unless the team is a very strong one.

Tips for indoor soccer

Some useful tips to keep in mind while playing indoor soccer are listed below.

  1. Keep the ball low

The indoor ball is the same as that used in regular soccer but since the surface is flatter, the ball bounces much higher. So make sure that you maintain control over your ball by controlling the bounce.

  1. Develop good footwork

The pace of the game requires the players to literally be quick on their feet. Frequent quick and controlled passes will make sure that you stay in possession of the ball longer and also ensures that the opposing team stays in a pressured defense.

  1. One-touch strategy (quick passes / avoid dribbling)

Unlike regular soccer, indoor soccer rarely needs the players to dribble. The best strategy is to pass the ball quickly to another player or shoot at the goal as soon as you can. Dribbling is best left for  practice sessions where it helps to develop feet movements.

  1. Wall bouncing

The walls are your friend in indoor soccer. Use the walls to pass the ball or even pass to yourself to avoid an opposing player. While the other player turns towards where you kicked the ball (a wall), you can run down and receive it when it bounces back.

To be able to use wall bouncing effectively in your game, practice with your team members against a wall to learn bouncing angles.

  1. All for one, one for all (versatile players)

The stronger a player is in their individual roles, the better the team will be but in close quarters, each player must be reasonably adapted to other roles as well. The midfielders especially must be good at both defense and offense. The defenders may be called upon to midfield.

  1. Strong goalie

That said about the field players, an indoor soccer game can be considered to be hinged upon the goalkeeper. Goals are frequently attempted and the goalie must be on the defense against rebounds too. Super agile goalies can even help support offense sometimes.

  1. Maintain position

Know your role and stick to it. It might be tempting for defenders to run up the field for attack but this leaves the defense open and games shift quickly in indoor soccer.

It is often a good idea to plant a player, in defense or offense.

  1. Rebound goals

Most goals in indoor soccer are scored on rebounds. Practice shooting goals in rebound with your team. It is a good option to attack while the other team is still adjusting from the first goal attempt.

This strategy works for defense as well as offense.

  1. Get the right shoes

Lastly, remember that the most important piece of equipment on any soccer field (indoor or outdoor) is your shoes. However, unlike regular soccer, cleats are a big no. Cleats will slip on the flat, or nearly flat indoor surface and you risk injury. Get flat patterned-sole shoes. If you don’t know what shoes to wear, this article might help you understand.
